Our Work in
Otero County
Actions Driven by Partnership and Powered from Within

At the Sacramento Mountains Foundation, we believe that our impact is not measured solely by the grants we award, but by the resilience of our partners and the thriving spirit of our community. By centering impact on the abundant assets already found in Otero County, we are working alongside local leaders to turn a shared vision into a measurable reality. Every success story is a direct reflection of our commitment to building a stronger, more connected home for all of us.

Strengthening Our Educational Roots
Empowering Educators and Students
Through our flagship TeachOtero program, we eliminate the barriers to classroom success. We believe teachers shouldn't have to pay out of pocket for the tools their students need to excel.
-
The Outcome: Over 100 grants of up to $1,000 awarded across Otero County schools, providing essential supplies, equipment, and enrichment activities that directly enhance the learning environment.
Building Organizational Resilience
Capacity Building and Professional Excellence
Strong leadership and sound infrastructure are the backbones of a thriving community. We provide the "hands-on" technical assistance necessary to help our local nonprofits achieve long-term sustainability.
-
Nonprofit Summit: An annual, full-day intensive conference featuring national experts to elevate fundraising, legal, and financial management skills.
-
Technical Assistance: Providing startup guidance, governance advice, and professional national searches for executive leadership (as seen with the Flickinger Center for Performing Arts).
-
Grant Writing Success: Our staff grant writer has helped local organizations secure over $1 million in state and national funding to date—all provided at no cost to our partners.

Enhancing Community Health and Vitality
Strategic Investments in Youth and Housing
We tackle complex regional challenges—from mental health to housing—by implementing evidence-based solutions and mobilizing community input.
-
Youth Behavioral Health: Funding the launch of The Seven Challenges at the Counseling Center, an adolescent program that meets youth where they are to improve mental health and reduce substance use.
-
The AVD Initiative: Partnering to address abandoned, vacant, and distressed properties in Alamogordo through strategic toolkits and community speak-out sessions.
Fostering Community Connection
Convening Voices and Celebrating Service
A connected community is a resilient one. We create spaces for dialogue, inspiration, and the recognition of those who serve our region.
-
The Speaker Series: Bringing world-class voices like Terry Bradshaw to Otero County to spark inspiration and shared energy.
-
Civic Dialogue: Sponsoring screenings of films like First We Bombed New Mexico and Undivide Us to encourage civil conversation on critical regional issues.
-
Recognizing Service: Supporting our first responders and volunteers through gestures like the Alamogordo Police Department and COPE Christmas celebrations.
